Finding a skill
We have tried to structure the site in a way that is logical for finding skills however sometimes people have differing ideas on where they should reside (which is normal and unavoidable when dealing with things like this). If you can't find a skill in the areas you think it should be then give the search part way down the left hand side a try. If you still can't find it then you may want to let people know that it is missing from the site and add it to the list of Missing skills. That way people know you were looking for it and someone with the right knowledge can add it.Requesting a skill
If you can't find a skill on our site then you may want to add it to our list of Missing skills to let people know. We regularly review this list and try to find people who may be able to offer their knowledge and advice. To add a skill you will first need to create an account but this is quick and easy.
Adding a skill
Before adding a skill you may want to do a search for it to make sure it isn't in the site. Before adding a skill you will need to be logged in. If you don't have an account, it is quick and easy to create one.
The easiest way to add a skill is to create a link to it from within another skill. Alternatively, if it doesn't relate to any other existing skills you can do a search for the skill in the search box on the left hand side. The search results page will give you the opportunity to create the page if it doesn't exist. The page will be set up with the default template for the skill. The template contains several headings for various sections that can be filled in. If you don't have any knowledge to add to one of these headings please don't remove it as someone else may have knowledge to add to that section. You can however add more headings if relevant.
If the skill you are adding was on the Missing skills page you would be best to edit that page and remove that skill.
We also ask that when you first add a skill you link it to the relevant categories to make it easy for people to find it (afterall, if you are going to go to the effort to add your knowledge you want to make it easy for people to benefit from it).
To add a skill to a category you will need to put the text Category:<insert category here> at the bottom of the page and enclose it in double square brackets (see the Wikipedia tutorial mentioned in editing a skill to find out more details on this). Please try to avoid putting skills on the top level categories but instead place them in sub categories. If a relevant sub category doesn't exist then you are free to make one (to do this link your skill to the new category, this will automatically make the category. Then you can go into the new category and add it to the relevant parent category)
Editing a skill
There will be many different ways to improve at a given skill you respect the opinions of others and don't remove their input unless you have good reason to (ie it is a dangerous activity or such). To edit a skill you will need to be logged in. If you don't have an account, it is quick and easy to create one.
To get to the edit interface you will need to click on the 'edit' button at the top of the page which will take you to the editing interface. From here you can make your changes. We ask that you put a summary of your changes in also to make it easier for people to keep track of what has been done and when you are happy click Save Page.
As Improve is based on the same software as Wikipedia you can find out more about how to edit a skills page by checking out the tutorial at Wikipedia.
